Pigeon Talk:
"Like
a Good Neighbor, The Sanders were there". Thank you.
Who said that fancy birds couldn't fly? Well, Sammie
can. One morning I was loft flying our youngest flyers
and my best dropper Sammie flew off with the other
pigeons. We've had her
1 and 1/2 years and she has never gone off like this.
Thirty minutes later, she flew out of a tree and went
into another one. She never came home that day. I
assumed that the hawk we had around may have scared her
or worse. At 5:00 PM the next day, I received a call
from a nice couple who remembered my name from the local
newspaper article that we were interviewed for. They had
found a bird with a band on its leg and thought that I
would know what to do. I asked if they could read the
band number to me. When they did, it had all of these
fancy letters and numbers on it. I said, "Wow, it must
be someone's special bird"! I was not familiar with that
kind of band, but I had planned to take care of the bird
and contact the Au to help locate the owner. Anyway, I
ride out over 2 miles from my home across the interstate
to meet these strangers. When I arrived , I looked at
the bird in the crate and said, "Sammie, what are you
doing here"? It was someone's special bird all right ,
it was mine. I thanked those nice people and
congratulated them for doing such a great job in caring
for her. I was also able to talk to them about the sport
and Sammie's role. I gave them my card for reference if
they ever need my help again.
What a story and what a special satinette my Sammie is.
I still can't believe she crossed that interstate.
What I Learned:
What I do and not do, counts!
Just a few pointers when promoting this sport and
recruiting new members.
Helpful Hints: www.pigeon.org ...promotions.
1. Refer people to the Au website.
2. Don't focus on the money races. Just mention that
the sport has different levels of competing.
3. Let people know that our sport can be enjoyed by
the whole family.
4. Be patient with new flyers and help them all that
you can.
5. Talk about the pigeons themselves and what they
have done in the past and what they do today.
6. Keep up to date with the issues affecting our
sport so that you will always have a ready defense.
7. Always be aware of your practices in the sport
and how the public may perceive them. This counts
the most!
