WHAT I'VE LEARNED...

I learned that the male pigeons are very territorial. One morning I weaned some young ones and put them in a section where we have an older bird that had to recover from a broken foot. He has been very good with the younger ones until these new ones came in. For some reason, this one little pigeon wanted to be on the top spot. "Broken Foot" was not having it! I thought he was going to ring the little guy's neck, so I put "Broken Foot" in one of the breeding cages for time out! Later that evening, Byron noticed the bird in the cage and asked me what was wrong with the bird? He thought that maybe he was sick. I told him that I put "Broken Foot" in time out and why I did it. He laughed and explained that the little one had to respect the older one and his territory. Needless to say, I had to let "Broken Foot" back in the suite. He was nicer to the bird, but he took his spot back.

PIGEON TALK

In the pigeon's world, respect is very important. When a new cock is put in with the old cocks, he immediately has to fight for his right to be there. They will fight for perches and hens and their children. It seems to me, that from that aspect, there is not much difference in their world and ours.

My husband Byron is a Golden Mattens fan, so this is his boy! This Inbred Golden Mattens cock is a complete gentleman with a look of a very wise bird. He is from Mike Schmidt's Speed Shop Loft. Both of his parents are GFL birds.
