Pigeon Talk: To All of our fellow fanciers, Merry Christmas and May God richly bless you in every way! My favorite time is upon us. Breeding Season! We are so ready to meet the young ones of our new family of birds! I have prepared all year for this time. I have a great website introducing our breeders thanks to Val Minnick, The Pigeon Place, a pedigree program, thanks to David Scott, Crosslanders Breeder's loft, and my very own filing system that helps me to keep track of EVERYTHING that we do and spend and win in this sport. Each breeder has its own folder that includes their pedigree and history of past records , previous owners, and future wins of their youngsters. And of course, pictures! Overkill you think? No way! With 29 pairs of breeders, you better get organized. Its my hobby and I love it!
What I learned: When you get good advice, use it! Last breeding season we put a pair of breeders together and the union was way too violent for my taste. More intense than normal. Maybe being a woman, I don't particularly care for hens being pecked in the head until they submit to the nest bowl, so I objected . Our friend who observed this and my being upset about it, suggested that we put the cock and hen across from each other for two days and try again on the third day. It worked! So, this year we decided to premate our breeders by using the same technique. We put the first round of breeders across from each other in separate cages for two days and put them together for one full day. Within 30 minutes 5 of the 12 pairs were kissing. There was some pecking but nothing overly violent. We started premating on Nov. 20th and now they will be separated until Dec. 9th when it is time for them to breed. This way they will be happy to see each other when they get together again. It's only right to get to know each other before going to the nest bowl. Don't you agree!

This is my beautiful Noah. I had to have a white bird and he is one of the
best. He is perfect in the hand with a peaceful nature. A perfect bird to
Feature at Christmas Time!
When choosing our breeders, I asked my husband about show quality pigeons.
That's when I learned of Dr. Mike Brown from Skylake Sions Loft . Byron
told me that he had Peformance show quality long distance pigeons. After
visiting his website, I knew that I had to have some of his birds. I was
particularly interested in Pair # 42, but because he had just put this
pair together, he didn't have any young ones available. Then he surprised
us with something even more remarkable. He offered us Noah, a full brother
to the cock of Pair #42 and Alley, a full sister to Melanie, the hen of
Pair#42. I was too happy. Byron also got a pair that Dr. Mike suggested as
his best. Because of the shipping problems at that time, all four of our
Sions had to travel the distance to get to us. Thanks to Dr. Mike and his
good friend Thomas Baldwin, we were able to welcome these beautiful birds
into our loft. And what a treasure they are!
